On Sunday 22nd October 2006, a small team of Phoenix fighters travelled to Birmingham to take part in the Lau Gar Kung Fu Nationals.

First fighter of the day was George from the Crawley class. He comfortably  won his first three fights to move into the semi-finals. In his next fight he came up against the eventual winner, but narrowly lost out in a very close fight. In the fight off for third place he couldn't quite overcome his opponent but came a very creditable fourth in only his second tournament.

The next fighters of the day were Faye (Crawley) and Ruth (Croydon), competing in the Ladies Division. They both got through their first fights but didn't manage to progress any further, unfortunately both getting drawn against more experienced fighters in this open graded section. Combining with Rosemarie from Birmingham they also entered the Ladies Team event. After three very hard rounds they had made it to the Semi-finals against the Team from Bristol Lau Gar. The Semi-final was a very close, with Bristol just getting the win (2-1) and going on to and winning the final. In the fight off for third place the Phoenix Team successfully defeated their second Scottish team of the day to earn themselves third place.

In the Senior Mens +75kg Division, Dean from Sutton/Croydon was taking the chance to do the Points fighting instead of his usual Continuous. He fought very well in the first round comfortably winning his first fight. In the second round he had a much harder fight coming up against a former World Champion. In a high scoring fight he eventually lost out to his more experienced opponent.
