On the 16th July 2006, members of the Phoenix squad competed in the 5th annual CIMAC World Cup, the largest of the CIMAC tournament series.

Competing for the first time in an Open tournament, were classmates Jake and Jordan from Croydon. Jordan was up first in the boys -5'6" section. After a close fight in the first round, he went on to win the next three fights more confortably, including an action packed final securing him the first place trophy! Jake was up next in the boys +5'6" section. After progressing through to the final, he found his opponent to be significantly taller than him, with a long reach and fast kicks!! After a slow start, he closed the gap in the second half of the fight but unable to score enough points before the final bell, he walked away with a creditable second place trophy.

As usual in the Novice ladies section, several of our ladies were competing over the the two weight categories. In the -62kg section, Nicci and Faye were unlucky, both going out of the tournament in the early rounds. Ruth then continued her successful run at tournaments this year, making it through the early rounds and into the final. In a close fight, where the lead changed hands many times, she narrowly lost out to a competitor from Roy Baker's Ireland squad and finshed in second place. In the +62kg section, Katy also had a tough battle with a rival from earlier in the season but was unfortuante not to beat her this time!!

Another of our ladies fighting on the day was Ann-Marie, who was competing in the light-contact -65kg section. After making it through to the final, she missed out after a very close, hard hitting battle with Chantelle from Watford Freestyle to take second place.

In the intermediate mens divisions, we had Anthony from Croydon in the +75kg section and Lee from Redhill in the -75kg section. While they both fought very well, neither of them were able to progress through the early rounds this time.

In the senior mens divisions, we had Andy and Anthony from Crawley competing. Andy was in the +84kg section, he had a tough opening round and although he fought well, he was unsuccessful on this ocassion. Despite this result, he still leads this section overall for the season so far. Anthony competed in the -63kg section and after a comfortable win in the opening round, against another of  Roy Baker's Irish fighters, he lost out after a close fight to Matthew from Dorking Freestyle.

The next competition will be the CIMAC Superleague in Maidenhead on the 10th September 2006.
