On Saturday 17th February a few members of the Phoenix squad headed to Nottingham to attend the W.A.K.O. British Championships. The competition is held on the Saturday and Sunday, Light and Full Contact on the Saturday and Semi Contact and Forms on the Sunday. As well as being the National Championships, the first three competitiors in each division earn selection to the W.A.K.O. Great Britain Squad and have the chance to compete at the World Championships later this year. Competing on Saturday in the Light Contact we had Ann-Marie (Croydon) in the Ladies -60kg Division and Lee (Sutton) in the Mens -94kg Division. Ann-Marie was first to fight on Saturday, after registering at the fighting area it was clear she would be in for some hard battles with a really large entry for this Division. Having to fight for 2 x 2 minute rounds in all the fights at this competition would add to the amount of hard work for this weekend. After comfortably winning through the first three rounds she had a much tougher fight in the Quarter Final round but was once again successful and safely in the Semi Finals. In the Semi Final, Ann-Marie narrowly lost out in a very close match that was tied at the end of 4 minutes and went into an extra round of 1 minute. The judges decision was 2-1 in favour of the eventual winner of the Division. By getting 3rd place Ann-Marie has earned a place on the GB Squad. Lee was in action a short while later, also in a Division with a large number of entries. He was extremely unlucky to lose in the second round, in a fight that he appeared to be comfortably winning. Many of us were surprised when the judges gave the decision 2-1 in favour of his opponent. |

Getting the tournament season underway, we once again travelled to Windsor for the first Superleague event of the year. Arriving at the venue for this event we had a squad of 35 fighters and 15 spectators!! We would like to thank so many of you for making the effort to train hard and come out and give your support. Once we had everyone entered into their correct divisions, we had fighters on almost all of the six area's right from the start. The first of many successes throughout the day was Jarrod (Croydon) fighting in the Novice Boys -4'5" Division. He battled past all of his opponents to make it into the final which he narrowly lost, but earned himself 2nd place and getting the squad off to a good start. We didn't have to wait too long for the next trophies with brothers Jack and Reese (Caterham) getting 1st and 3rd places in the Novice Boys -4'9" Division. In the next height up (-5'4") we also had a double success with Darren and Jordan (Croydon) taking 1st and 2nd. In the the final Novice Boys Division (+5'4") there was also a 1st place for Ross (Basingstoke), who along with all the other winners in the Novice Divisions were attending their first Open Tournament. In the Senior Boys +5'5" Division there was a well earned 3rd place for Stuart (Crawley). In the Junior Team Competition, our Phoenix Team, Stuart, Darren and Jack battled through the early rounds but finally lost out to Team Renegade (Watford) in the Semi-finals. In their next fight they earned themselves a creditable 3rd place. When the adult competition got underway we didn't have to wait long for some more success for Phoenix. In the Junior Mens +75kg, Andrew (Basingstoke) won 2nd place, while in the Novice Ladies -60kg Division, Kirsty (Croydon) took 3rd place, a great result for them both at their first Superleague event. When the Senior Mens and Ladies Division got going the Phoenix fighters continued to place highly in their Divisions with trophies from; Ann-Marie (2), Tony, Lee (2), John, Dean, Lee and Anthony. 1st Place 2nd Place 3rd Place |
